Lowell celebrates Kerouac's "Beat"

September marks the 50th anniversary of the publishing of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road." To celebrate, Kerouac's hometown, Lowell, has planned three months of events. The festivities began with the opening of an exhibit of his life and work. The central piece of the collection is the 120-foot scroll on which Kerouac typed the original manuscript.

Thirty-seven Boston area bicyclists rode in a silent procession from Somerville to the Boston Common Tuesday as part of Ride of Silence 2007, an international event honoring bicyclists killed or injured in crashes.

State legislators voted to not submit to a public vote the proposed constitutional amendment that marriage can only be between one woman and one man. The vote allowed gay marriage to stay legal in Massachusetts. The two sides greeted the decision with cries of "thank you" or disapproval.(Video package.)

State legislators hold hearing on bike safety bill

The Massachusetts joint committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security held hearings for new legislation concerning bicycle safety laws. The bill aims to tweak current laws and equate bicycles to cars and motorcycles. The new legislation is similar to a bill passed last year that was vetoed by then Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey.

Private dorm planned to serve Boston student market

Two private Dallas building contractors have filed with the BRA for a permit to build a privately run dormitory near Symphony Hall. The two companies have purchased a portion of the YCMA building to build on. Area residents are concerned that a large concentration of students might adversely affect the residential nature of the neighborhood.
